9-week-old baby raped by her grandfather

Luther Gene Taylor has a history of child abuse, although details are sparse in the previous case. He declined to comment Friday from the Bay County Jail.
SPRINGFIELD — Police have released additional information about the circumstances surrounding a suspected rape of a 9-week-old perpetrated by the child’s grandfather.
Luther Gene Taylor, 51, remained behind bars Friday on a charge of sexual battery on a person less than 12 years old. He was taken into custody early Thursday after the parents of the 9-week-old, who will not be identified because of the nature of the case, brought the child to a hospital with obvious injuries to her genitals she suffered while in the care of Taylor. He is being held on a $750,000 bond, court records stated.
Taylor has a history of child abuse, although details are sparse in the previous case. He declined to comment Friday from the Bay County Jail.
Springfield Police Chief Philip Thorne said Taylor worked off-shore and sometimes would stay with his family on Springfield Avenue when he was ashore. At the time the child suffered the injuries Wednesday, Taylor was visiting the child’s parents, his family, at their home, Thorne said.
He was watching the child while they were out of the house running errands,” Thorne said. “When the parents came home, they could tell the child was seriously injured and immediately rushed her to the hospital.”
Springfield police reported they were notified of the child being transported to the emergency room with “what was identified as a severe vaginal tear.” The surgical team working on the infant further added that the injuries were caused by forced penetration, police reported.
“Once they determined where the incident took place, we responded to the residence,” Thorne said. “That’s where we took (Taylor) into custody.”
Taylor was identified as the child’s paternal grandfather. When police spoke with him, Taylor confirmed he was the sole caregiver at the time of the incident, according to his arrest affidavit.
Taylor “acknowledged he was alone with the child at the time the injury occurred but refused to explain how it happened,” officers wrote. “While swabbing the suspect’s fingers (for DNA), feces was found on right hand center finger at the cuticle area.”
According to court records, Taylor was arrested in 1992 on misdemeanor charges of battery and child abuse. Records of that incident could be lost to time, however. Thorne said since the 1992 charges were dropped, they are having trouble retrieving any of the documents.
