AYSON, UT (KSL/CNN) – An 18-year-old in Utah is in jail and under investigation for murder and reckless endangerment after police say he helped a 16-year-old girl kill herself and filmed the incident.
A hunter found the 16-year-old hanging from a tree Saturday morning. Near the body were two plastic grocery bags and a can of industrial strength air duster, according to a police affidavit.
In one bag was a handwritten note identifying the girl and a cell phone. There was also a receipt in the bag for the purchase of a rope with 18-year-old Tyerell Przbycien’s name on the credit card information, the affidavit says.
"He facilitated the purchase of the items that were used, and he played an active role in her death,” said Sgt. Spencer Cannon with Utah County Police.
Investigators say the two were friends, who traveled to the area Friday night with the initial intention to take their own lives, but only one of them ended up dead.
The cell phone found at the scene had recorded a video of the girl’s death.
The video shows the girl standing on a rock with a noose around her neck, the police affidavit states, before she inhales a dose of the air duster and loses consciousness. She later falls off the rock.
Przbycien and the girl can be heard talking to each other in the video, Cannon says.
The whole things lasts around 10 to 11 minutes, and police say Przbycien never offered the 16-year-old his assistance.
"It's not very often that you get that kind of recording," Cannon said.
During the investigation Saturday, police say Przbycien returned to the scene and confessed to helping the girl purchase the materials she used to kill herself as well as filming the incident.
"He disclosed to the investigators that he kind of had a fascination with death and had an interest in watching someone die,” Cannon said.
Investigators say they believe Przbycien neither encouraged the girl to kill herself nor physically forced her to do so. The 16-year-old had a history of mental health issues and suicidal thoughts, authorities say.
"Anybody who would think that suicide is their last and only option clearly needs some help, and anybody who might think... [about] helping somebody with that clearly needs some help too,” Cannon said.
Przbycien was arrested Saturday and is under investigation for murder and reckless endangerment.
