CAPITOLA (KION) — A 36-year-old man killed his 8-year-old daughter then himself Sunday afternoon while sitting in a parked car near the west entrance of the Capitola Mall, police said.
According to Capitola Police Chief Terry McManus, the wife of the 36-year old called police around 3 p.m. concerned that her husband was going to commit suicide. The wife also informed police that the 8-year old was with him.
When police arrived at the mall they found the 36-year man dead in the driver’s seat. The 8-year-old’s body was in the passenger seat, McManus said.
Carlos Garcia, 36, was found dead in an apparent murder-suicide at a mall parking lot in Capitola, California. Police say Garcia fatally shot his 7-year-old, who relatives identified as Yaxtel Tapia, before turning the gun on himself, according to news station KSBW.
It is not clear what the motive was behind the murder-suicide.
Before the shooting, Garcia had been shopping with his family when he disappeared with his daughter.
His wife called 911 around 3:15 p.m. to report that he was making suicidal threats from inside their car parked outside of Macy’s.
Police responded Sunday afternoon to find man and 7-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds in the family’s Kia Soul. The pair were pronounced dead shortly after paramedics arrived, the Mercury News reported.
Relatives created a GoFundMe on Monday to cover Tapia’s funeral costs, according to KSBW.
“The loss of our beloved little girl was very sudden and unexpected,” her aunt Maria Tapia writes on the GoFundMe page.
