Heroin Overdose Deaths Exceed Gun Homicides For First Time

Opioid deaths have surpassed gun homicides for the first ever in the U.S., according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed by the Washington Post
More Americans died from heroin-related incidents than from gun homicides in 2015. A stark opposite of just a few years ago in 2007 when gun homicides outnumbered heroin deaths by more than 5 to 1.
Opioid fatalities continued to spike in 2015, surpassing 30,000, almost 5,000 more deaths than in 2014. Deaths related to strong synthetic opiates, like fentanyl, dramatically increased by nearly 75 percent from 2014 to 2015. Meanwhile, heroin deaths rose by more than 2,000 incidents.
In another first, there were more deaths due to to heroin than traditional opioid painkillers, such as hydrocodone and oxycodone, since the late 1990s. Many opioid deaths also involve a combination of drugs, like multiple types of opioids, or opioids combined with other sedative substances like alcohol, the Post reported.
"The epidemic of deaths involving opioids continues to worsen," said CDC Director Tom Frieden told the Washington Post. "Prescription opioid misuse and use of heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl are intertwined and deeply troubling problems."
In the DEA’s 2015 National Drug Threat Assessment, officials found drug overdose deaths have become the leading cause of injury death in America, exceeding the number of deaths by motor vehicles and firearms every year since 2008.

Heroin Overdose Epidemic: Deaths Exceed Gun Homicides For First Time In US, Report

CDC Reports More Heroin Deaths Than Gun Homicides in America December 10, 2016 Jenn Jacques

Deaths from opioid overdoses rose in Minnesota previous year, especially among younger adults, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Heroin and other opioids are fueling the current overdose epidemic.
By less than 100 deaths, 2015 records recorded by the US government divulge that heroin was a more lethal agent of death in America than guns - a statistic that could trigger more sparks in the gun control vs. gun rights debate.
Since 2015, fatalities involving heroin overdose increased by 2,000 cases, which exceeded deaths from opioid prescription painkillers for the first time since 1990. Synthetic opioids, like the painkiller fentanyl, killed nearly 9,600 people, a 73 percent surge.
Many types of opioids are perfectly legal when they are prescripted by doctors. Drug overdoses were a significant factor, but an unexpected increase in the death rate from heart disease, the nation's No. 1 killer, was another major reason. Deaths from all opioids, including prescription painkillers topped 30,000 for the first time in recent history.
Much of the increase in drug overdose deaths is due to a spike in the rate of opioid abuse, a trend that has increasingly disturbed public health officials over the past decade.
Pennsylvania's overdose fatality rate, 26.3 per 100,000 residents past year, according to the CDC, was sixth in the nation, compared with eighth in 2014. "I think that's a hard concept for a lot of people to grasp because we have a historic setup in our brains of drugs equal big cities", Kazel said. This rise involves deaths caused by synthetic opiates, like fentanyl. The unprecedented amount trumped the number of people who died in vehicle accidents, which came to 37,757.
The problem with fentanyl is that it intensifies the effects of other drugs, making them even more potent and risky for the human body to endure. "It drives a wedge between people who need help and the services they need".
"The opioid epidemic is devastating American families and communities".

Groton — Fewer young people in Groton are smoking cigarettes, using marijuana or drinking alcohol, but many still don't understand the risk of using prescription drugs, a youth survey has found.
Of the more than 1,300 students who participated in the 2016 survey sponsored by the Groton Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention coalition, 15.2 percent checked “don’t know” when asked about the risks of using prescription drugs occasionally without their own prescription. Another 15.6 percent said they believed there was either "no risk" or "very little risk" in using prescription drugs.
